Abstract
Background and Objectives : Sudden hearing loss is defined as an abrupt onset of sensorineural hearing loss which develops over a period of hours or a few days without definite cause unilaterally or bilaterally. The etiology and pathophysiology of sudden hearing loss are controversial at present time. Various prognostic factors have been reported in the literature: age, presence of vertigo and tinnitus, initial hearing level, shape of audiogram, and time of initiation of treatment in the final hearing outcome. We performed retrospective study about clinical data in sudden deafness patients and also compared the results of audiologic studies and clinical manifestations. The aim of the study was an evaluation of the association in sudden hearing loss and blood type.

Materials and Methods : We reviewed the medical records, audiologic records and each blood type of 139 patients who admitted to the Department of Otolaryngology from January 2003 to December 2004.

Results: Of the 139 patients, the number of blood type A, B, AB, and O were 44 (32%), 34 (24%), 24 (17%), 37 (27%). Total hearing recovery rate was 56% (n=78). 56% (n=25) of blood type A group, 44% (n=15) of blood type B group, 54% (n=13) of blood type AB group and 68% (n=25) of blood type O group showed improvement.

Conclusion: These results demonstrate that there is no significant statistical relation of each blood types in recovery rate.
